French Quarter + Krewe du Vieux

*Disclaimer: I am posting pictures of a satirical parade – if you do not like sexual and/or political jokes, please read no further! Thanks!

The Mardi Gras season is getting under way in New Orleans!  The Krewe du Vieux is New Orleans’ carnival pranksters – every year they do a parade making fun of whatever politicians or disasters that wreaked havoc on the city that year.  Highlights from this year’s parade included the sub-krewe Spermes’ float, which was themed around a slightly altered version of HBO’s “Treme,” and Sarah Palin driving a sled in the “idiot-a-rod” race with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal as the lead dog. And of course, the BP oil spill was heavily featured.

The Krewe du Vieux is a New Orleans Mardi Gras or Carnival krewe, originally known as the Krewe du Vieux Carre (“Vieux Carre” being another term for the city’s French Quarter). It is one of the earliest parades of the New Orleans Carnival calendar, and is noted for wild satirical and adult themes, as well as for showcasing some of the best Brass and Jazz Bands in New Orleans.

It is unique among all Mardi Gras parades in the city because it alone carries on the old traditions of Carnival celebrations, by using decorated mule-drawn floats, accompanied by costumed revelers dancing in the streets to the sounds of jazzy street musicians.

Well – be you republican or democrat, an oil-field worker or an office worker…you can bet that if you made the headlines, you are sure to be featured in the parade!  But it’s all in good humor.  Enjoy!

Me & the Bestest!
